In colonial Africa, an educated Black nationalist (Sidney Poitier) returns from abroad to find his homeland gripped by racial tension and colonial unrest. Struggling between pacifist ideals and the demands of a growing resistance movement, he must decide where his loyalties lie as tensions mount. Eartha Kitt co-stars as his devoted and politically aware wife.
